Berangkat dari pemahaman bahwa ruang sesungguhnya bukan sesuatu yang terberi, tulisan ini fokus pada dua substansi besar yang saling berkaitan. Pertama, pembentukan ruang Pathok Negoro. Dalam hal ini Pathok Negoro dilihat dari fungsinya terhadap Keraton Yogyakarta, yakni sebagai batas fisik, kultural, maupun filosif. Kedua, pembentukan identitas yang didasarkan atas perkembangan dan dinamisasi ruang. Pathok Negoro mengalami perubahan hampir pada seluruh aspek kehidupan, terutama politik, sosial dan budaya. Hal tersebut mempengaruhi aspek tata ruang, dan sebaliknya terjadinya hal-hal tersebut juga dipengaruhi oleh perubahan ruang. Buku ini menunjukkan bahwa kebijakan atas tata ruang adalah kebijakan politis.

Departing from the understanding that the space is not given, this book focuses on two major inter-related substances. First, the establishment of space Pathok Negoro. In this case Pathok Negoro is viewed from the function towards the Yogyakarta Palace which is as a physical, cultural, and philosophical border. Second, the formation of identity based on the development and dynamics of space. Pathok Negoro has changed in almost the whole aspects of life, especially politics, social and cultural. It affects the spatial aspects, and is also affected by changes in space at the reverse. This book argued that spatial policy is a political decision.
