Electoral Governance

Electoral governance post-reformation has been one of the focuses of PolGov research studies and advocacy since in the beginning. This topic is related to issues of electoral democracy governance (elections) to the political aspects of the work outside the electoral procedure. Electoral Governance examines the pattern of power relations that arises surrounding the election event.

With elaborating practices that contributes to the hybrid / defective democracy formation in Indonesia, the studies in this topic try to expose diverse power relations between the actors on the stage behind the election. Through a series of research on this topic, PolGov offers approaches of research and analysis models of electoral governance through different eyes than previous studies.

Research approaches and analysis models in this topic put electoral governance system in Indonesia into critical a study that is always captive by the practice of consensual governance which indicates the continuing operation of certain power logic whereas governance elections have been revised from time to time. Indonesia is one of the largest democratic states in the world that has been exploring ways to overcome the situation. With ‘structural’ approach, the research offer the perspective that is not merely embeds the democratic affairs of liberal democratic tradition through the electoral system but at the same time demands creation strategies and changing the culture of Indonesia in a democracy.

PolGov has been doing some research, advocacy, and publications related to issues such as money politics during the election, the instrument for the political education of citizens, political literacy of voters, etc. Furthermore, PolGov also has began to develop a study to clarify aspects / logic that works behind violations of electoral procedures, for instance the affairs of democracy with power relations between actors (patron-client), and so forth.

To optimize electoral government studies, this issue has now also been developed as one of the graduate level of concentration to study graduate program of Politics and Government that will hopefully provide mutual benefit to the knowledge development on this issue.

Studies in this topic include themes such as:

  • The issue mapping of electoral government
  • Redefining the problems of electoral governance in the development of democracy in Indonesia.
